Delhi
history
Delhi is a city with a rich history which has witnessed the rise and falls of many emperors and empires. This city of mystery has the eternal Jamuna which has witnessed the pulsating 5,000 year history of Delhi . It was the creation of the Indraprastha by the Pandavas that paved the start of Delhi history, and this is what transformed this barren land into an idyllic haven.
Various kings and emperors had fixed their royal citadels here like Lal Kot, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, Ferozabad, Delhi Sher Shahi and Shahjahanbad. It is the integration of all these cities that has brought about Delhi , a city of power and imperial sway. There have been about eight cities around modern Delhi ; and according to legend, the person who founded a new city here will lose it. The British were the last to found New Delhi in 1911, and since then, they have lost the city to India .
Besides the rise and fall of many empires in Delhi , Delhi was the focal point for the first war of independence in 1857. Even though the revolt did not reach its intended conclusion, this is when Delhi became a thorn to the British. When the Britishers had shifted their capital from Calcutta to Delhi , freedom struggle activities were directed towards Delhi .
It was the goal of the Azad Hind Fauz to capture Delhi and establish Swaraj. Today, the same slogan, ‘Dilli Chalo' is still used by leaders and political parties in Delhi in rallies and demonstrations. And it was the hoisting of the tricolor at Red Fort in Delhi that had finally marked a chapter in Indian history.
